The two mansard Victorian, side-by-side single family homes were built for Melville Madison Bigelow (Aug 2, 1846-May 4, 1921) in 1873.  He was a brilliant legal scholar who pioneered the research of medieval law, the history of Common Law.  His research in this field would give him international renown, especially in England.  His treatises for the practicing lawyers and courts, as well as textbooks for law students, engendered a growth in the study of the history of law and its applications.   The 1872 BU Law School which he helped found, not only benefited from his scholarship, but also from his many years of teaching there as faculty member.   The property stayed in the family until the mid-1940's.
